Profile

Jim has had an artistic background since childhood, and he won his High School Art Prize. At Williams College (Class of ’64) he received a stong foundation in Basic Design and he greatly improved his drawing skills under Lee Hirsche.

He spent the year after college in Europe, where he enrolled at the Ecole des Beaux Arts. He traveled extensively, painting and drawing the great architectural monuments of Europe.

At Yale School of Architecture (Class of ’69), he was a student under Charles Moore, who had recently finished the much acclaimed Sea Ranch. Under Moore, Jim learned about the importance of The Big Idea, Crystal Clear Circulation, natural light, the progression of spaces, and the nuances of line, texture and repetitive elements.

Jim designed and built his first house 35 years ago and his been doing residential design exclusively for almost 20 years.
